CM on Evaluation of photonuclear cross sections and
Review of new evaluations for the Updated Photonuclear Data Library

25-27 June 2018, IAEA, Vienna

Purpose

The purpose of these two meetings was to present and discuss the new evaluated photonuclear cross sections that were assigned to the evaluators under the CRP on Updating the Photonuclear Data Library (see CRP webpage for details) and perform a detailed review of these evaluations before selecting them for the Updated Photonuclear Data Library.

The previous IAEA Photonuclear Data Library (2000) comprised the evaluations of photoabsorption and photoneutron cross sections for 164 nuclides. In the new updated library, in addition to a revision of the evaluations for these 164 nuclides, new evaluations for 36 nuclides with experimental data published after 2000 will be included.

The first meeting on 'Evaluations of photonuclear cross sections' focused on presentations of the evaluations and discussions around the models, input parameters and assessment of experimental data. A newly proposed method for assessing experimental data on partial photoneutron cross sections and correcting them was discussed in depth.

The second meeting on 'Review of the evaluations for Updating the Photonuclear Data Library' consisted of joint sessions where evaluators discussed their work with the reviewers and answered questions, with particular focus on the nuclides for which more than one group had submitted an evaluation. In one such case, 209Bi, a careful inter-comparison of the different data assessments and evaluations was performed and a final recommendation was made. For the remaining cases with multiple evaluations this inter-comparison work is on-going. A complete set of recommendations for all the 200 nuclides included in the new evaluation will be submitted to the IAEA in due course.
