The cylindrical L0259 1 17 axis of the target cell was aligned along the beam L0259 1 18 axis. The liquid 4He was maintained at 3.4 K with a L0259 1 19 target thickness of (4.17+-0.04)E+23 nuclei/cm2. The L0259 1 20 walls and end windows of the cell were made from L0259 1 21 0.125-mm-thick Kapton foil. L0259 1 22 DETECTOR (NAICR) The Compton scattered photons were detected L0259 1 23 by an array of eight NaI(Tl) detectors with core L0259 1 24 diameter of 25.4 cm surrounded by eight annular L0259 1 25 segments of 7.5-cm-thick NaI(Tl) crystals. The L0259 1 26 lengths of the core NaI crystals ranged from 25.4 to L0259 1 27 30.5 cm. The annular segments were used as an L0259 1 28 anticoincidence shield to veto the cosmic-ray L0259 1 29 background. Detectors were placed at scattering L0259 1 30 angles of theta = 55deg, 90deg and 125deg in the L0259 1 31 laboratory frame. L0259 1 32 INC-SOURCE (LCS) The HIgS facility produces a quasimonoenergetic L0259 1 33 Compton backscattered photon beam tunable in wide L0259 1 34 energy range with either linear or circular L0259 1 35 polarization. The gamma-ray beam pulses have a width L0259 1 36 of about 300 ps FWHM and are separated by 179 ns.
