L0280001 14 SAMPLE Authors used targets of Ca40, V51, Co59, In115, Sb121, L0280001 15 123, and Bi209. The targets used were thin enough so L0280001 16 that multiple scattering and straggling could not L0280001 17 cause part of the beam to miss either the secondary L0280001 18 emission monitor or the Faraday cup which were used L0280001 19 to integrate the primary electron beam. L0280001 20 METHOD The cross sections were obtained by comparison with L0280001 21 scattering from the proton. L0280001 22 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-S) The standard deviations arising from counting L0280001 23 statistics only in the determinations of the L0280001 24 target-nuclei elastic peak areas and of the proton L0280001 25 calibration peaks. The final L0280002 6 thickness of 0.090 in. was achieved by milling under L0280002 7 kerosene. The target contained 96% Ca40. It was L0280002 8 stored in diffusion pump oil to retard oxidation of L0280002 9 the surface. Approximately 1% oxygen was observed in L0280002 10 the scattering experiments. Because of recoil of the L0280002 11 target nucleus, the elastic peak from oxygen lies L0280002 12 about 0.7% lower in momentum than the peak from Ca40, L0280002 13 and the yield of electrons scattered from oxygen L0280002 14 could be identified and subtracted.
