SAMPLE     The target was a high-pressure gas cylinder of 25.7 cm O111700100025 
           length and 2 cm radius with carbon-fiber/epoxy walls ofO111700100026

           For the three target nuclei studied, N, Ar, and Xe, theO111700100029 
           target gas pressure was 40 bar, 28 bar, and 13 bar,    O111700100030 
           respectively.  The target temperature and pressure wereO111700100031 
           monitored during the experiment and stayed constant    O111700100032 
           within less than 1% throughout each specific           O111700100033

DETECTOR   (SCIN) The detector consisted of a plastic scintillatorO111700100035 
           cylinder divided into 28 deltaE-E-E sectors, each 1.6 mO111700100036 
           in active length.  The ends of the cylinder were closedO111700100037 
           by endcaps, each consisting of 14 deltaE-E plastic     O111700100038 
           scintillator sectors.  The scintillators stopped       O111700100039 
           normally incident protons of up to 250 MeV.            O111700100040 
           (MWPC) The trajectory information for charged particlesO111700100041 
           was provided by two coaxial cylindrical multiwire      O111700100042 
           proportional chambers inside the plastic cylinder.     O111700100043 
           Their angular resolution was about 1 degree FWHM.      O111700100044 
           With the solid angle coverage of more than 98% of 4pi  O111700100045 
           and the low proton threshold of about 20 MeV, a large  O111700100046 
           fraction of the phase space was accessible to LADS     O111700100047 
           even at low incident pion energies.                    O111700100048 
           The pi+ beam was defined by a set of plastic           O111700100049 
           scintillation detectors that counted the individual    O111700100050 
           pions and rejected particles in the beam halo.         O111700100051

           The final normalisation errors were in the range 6%-10%O111700100063 
           except at the lowest pion energy where it was 20%.     O111700100064

           momentum and the absorption final state and between    O111700100066 
            7% (at high pion energy and low multiplicity final    O111700100067 
           states, e.g., 2p state at 330 MeV) and 1% (for most    O111700100068
